In general, we consider the Hudson Valley to be a safe and accepting area in which to be a member of the LGBTQ Community. However, earlier this week, members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, assembled at Albany High School to convey their disdain for homosexuality.

Across the street, hundreds of counterprotestors sang, shouted and raised signs promoting love and acceptance. Their next target, a production of the “The Laramie Project” in Plattsburgh, which examines the 1998 hate crime murder of University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard.

Just a reminder to all that while we have made great strides, there are many out there who continue to speak out against us. Full coverage of this story is available on the Albany Times-Union website.
